This is also the time of year when your council needs
your help.
The tight economic times are impacting nonprofit charities across our county and Scouting is no exception. Currently, the Marin Council is working to close a modest funding gap in our budget and we need the assistance of all our Scouting friends and families to balance our operating budget, which closes on December 31, 2009.
If you haven't already responded to our year-end holiday card request, please consider doing so by making a donation before the end of the year. If you would like to make an additional donation, we would welcome your support. Every gift large or small makes a difference.
Your donation can be made online by clicking here or mailed to the Marin Council at 225 West End Ave, San Rafael, CA 94901. Happy Holidays and thank you for your support, Michael Dybeck
Scout Executive, CEO
P.S. Please remember, as you do your own year-end planning that donations to the Marin Council are tax deductible as allowed by law. Tax ID # 94-1156323
Pack 34 is invited to see the Globetrotters. Tickets are $17.50 per person, which is $10 off. We are going to buy the tickets on Thursday. So if you want to go, get me the cash at the pack meeting. Check or cash. They promise us in the lower bowl and in the first 30 rows. So should be a great time. As always, family members are invited.

I just wanted to pass on congratulations to everyone who helped with scouting for food this year. This year's campaign was our best collection year since I have been involved with Scouts. The Mill Valley Scouts collection numbers for the last three years have been: 2,184 lbs in 2007, 3,236 lbs in 2008 and 4,707 lbs this year. As you can see we have more than doubled the amount of food collected over the last three years. You should all be proud of the significant role you played in helping others, thanks for all of your efforts.
I hope that everyone who is going up the the Winter Camp this weekend has a great time. Be prepared for everything, it sounds like there could be a storm coming in this weekend. I wish I could be with you for this year's trip, bring me back some great winter camp stories for our pack meeting next week.
Please share this message with your boys, yours in scouting, Bruce
Can you Please try and explain why the kids do not have school tomorrow. Here is a nice explanation we found and good luck. See you at the pack meeting.
Doug and Bruce.
Many Americans mistakenly believe that Veterans Day is the day America sets aside to honor American military personnel who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained from combat. That's not quite true. Memorial Day is the day set aside to honor America's war dead. Veterans Day, on the other hand, honors ALL American veterans, both living and dead. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for dedicated and loyal service to their country. November 11 of each year is the day that we ensure veterans know that we deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have made in the lives to keep our country free.
To commemorate the ending of the "Great War" (World War I), an "unknown soldier" was buried in highest place of honor in both England and France ( (in England, Westminster Abbey; in France, the Arc de Triomphe). These ceremonies took place on November 11th, celebrating the ending of World War I hostilities at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). This day became known internationally as "Armistice Day".
In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day, and called upon Americans everywhere to rededicate themselves to the cause of peace. He issued a Presidential Order directing the head of the Veterans Administration (now called the Department of Veterans Affairs), to form a Veterans Day National Committee to organize and oversee the national observance of Veterans Day. Congress passed legislation in 1968 to move Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. However as it became apparent that November 11th was historically significant to many Americans, in 1978, Congress reversed itself and returned the holiday to its traditional date.
At exactly 11 a.m., each November 11th, a color guard, made up of members from each of the military branches, renders honors to America's war dead during a heart-moving ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery. The President or his representative places a wreath at the Tomb and a bugler sounds Taps. The balance of the ceremony, including a "Parade of Flags" by numerous veterans service organizations, takes place inside the Memorial Amphitheater, adjacent to the Tomb.
This month we will be working on our "Citizen" Activity Badge.
Since most of this work can be done at home, I have attached a work sheet that you can print and use for this.
Completed work sheets can be turned in at our general Pack Meeting in December. Note that the Webelo Handbook (starting on page #144) is a great resource of general information needed to answer the bulk of these questions. Other resources can be found online per the examples on the last page of the work sheet.
To fulfill item #10, we are working on scheduling a Den field trip that will take place near the end of this month. This may involve a tour of Mill Valley City Hall along with meeting and talking with a community leader, or, another option might be a tour of the Marin Civic Center with a visit to a “live” court room trial!
We will give you an update as these ideas develop.
Also, there is another opportunity to help you earn your “Citizen” badge by participating in our annual "Scouting for Food" activity. This takes place November 14th and November 21st (Per Doug Gelbach’s recent e-mail).
On November 22nd, we will be working on our 2nd round of “Athlete” activities with Bruce Cardinal & Rob Luster. We plan to "piggy back" a 1/2 hour Webelo gathering onto this already planned meeting to go over some additional “Citizen” items. So, please plan on staying around for an additional 30- Minutes.
Other Notes:
Notice that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and knowing its meaning is one of our requirements. I have included a link to an old "Red Skelton” video clip that you might find amusing and informative. Please watch this short video with your Webelo if you feel that it’s appropriate.
Learning about the American Flag and proper etiquette is also part of our “Citizen” requirement. It looks like we will have an opportunity to learn some of this at the pack meeting tomorrow (November 11th).
Please let me know if you have any questions or input regarding this message. Remember….“Do Your Best”.
Hi Webelos Parents, There are a lot of Scout activities approaching fast and we are looking for some help to make them all happen…business first. The website is a very good source of current information. www.Mvpack34.org Dave has set up a google calendar (I think he’s still working on it but up until recently the google calendar was automatically syncing to my iphone! Which is awesome!! Thanks Dave. When it’s complete he will send out instructions on how to make it work). We have 17 Webelos in the Eagle Patrol. That’s about 10 more than a Den should have-but Dave is confident that we can manage it and the more hands we have the more we can get done. We’ve also been assigned the privilege of managing Winter Camp this year. Our group will have priority over everyone else and it looks like there might not even be enough bunks for all of us to go. We are responsible for supplying and preparing the food and we would like to create a hat (knit hat is currently in the works). Susie Ames has volunteered to work with me on the menu and budget. If anyone else is an expert in this area and can offer help or is willing to do the Costco run – please let me know. In addition, if anyone has any good resources for purchasing approx 45 knit hats either embroidered or a sew on patch please let me know. Scott Shern already has the artwork he’s just working on the application. If we order a patch we would need to find someone with a sewing machine willing to sew them on! Anyone? If you have any ideas for activities (movie at night or activity we can set up for the boys in case there’s no snow) please speak up! Please respond to this email to confirm that we’ve got the right email address and to let me know if you would like to attend Marin Sierra Winter Camp. As soon as we reach our place in the pecking the order I will let you know how many spots are open. Pecking order within our group will be based on volunteers!! For the new scouts, up until this year we have not had any events where we had to limit the number of participants. We’ve always been able to accommodate all that want to participate. For some reason, Pack 34 is huge this year and we’re looking at ways of fixing this. We’ll probably start organizing events by Den (not Pack) so the groups are manageable. Enjoy the mid-week day off and hope to see you all at the Pack Meeting tomorrow night. Lisa Gilmore
Bring well fed scouts in running shoes. This is presidential fitness, plus, since its verteran’s day, we will have all the kids learn how to correctly fold an American Flag.
