Pack Campout - November 7-8

The campout is on. We have a great showing and looks like is should be perfect weather. Maybe a little cold, but we should be able to have a campfire at least (up until last week, they didn’t allow fires). The bad news is that the ranges are closed for the weekend. They tried and there was too many conflicts with the crew who helps with them. They did promise us we can head up and use them another time when we are not camping. I will get back with you on that one.

There are plenty of other things to do up at the property though. Bruce will lead a bike ride before dusk for the older boys or anyone who can do a single track. There are plenty of easy rides if the younger kids want to go on a ride. There’s a lake you can fish, bring your own pole. There are also plenty of hikes. Somewhere there is an old plane that crashed and the engine is still there. Will have a prize for the first kid who shows me a pic of it. Or just have the kids run around and play games like tag.

The pack will supply snacks on Saturday afternoon, dinner that eve. And smores later that night. Then breakfast and you are on your own for lunch on Sunday. Most get out of there before noon on Sunday.
We will not assign duties. Just ask and help out if you see something to do.

Things you will need to bring
Mess kit – for the kids, we will have plates for the adults.
Sleeping bag.
Pillow
Tent
Mattress pad if you want to be comfortable.
Flashlight.
Warm clothes.
Chair to sit by fire or A frame.
Scary stories to be told at campfire.

Here is a directions for those of you who haven’t been there.

baloo training

If anyone is interested, this is a great one day training program   we should have more leaders trained.  They require us to have at least one person who is baloo trained at all campouts.   I and bruce are, but if we cannot make it, the campout would have to be cancelled.   I picked this up and pasted it from the website.  It is at camp tamarancho.

Young Eagles

I am glad we're not flying tonight.  Everyone that came up to Gnoss flew today.  The program had at least a dozen planes and they flew over one hundred total kids.  We had from our pack, I think, 24 scouts fly today.  They had a bi-plane, the Red Bull stunt plane and several nice planes and great pilots.  The kids flew everywhere.  The wind just held off enough to keep the planes in the air.  Ian Pratt came zooming in at noon and was the last scout to fly.  I will send out photos.

Bruce

(Don't tell anyone, but a couple of the pilots let the kids take the wheel)

Young Eagles

Good Morning to All Participating in the Young Eagles program this morning,

The weather service is predicting high winds later today in the north bay. I am going up to Gnoss Field early, the pilots will cancel if there is an elevated risk possibility. Call me if you have any concerns or just want to make sure everything is still on as scheduled. Bruce 269-1666.

Webelos Athlete Achievement and Presidential Fitness Testing

Webelos Scouts,

Rob Luster and I will lead the activities for the Webelos Athlete Achievement and Fall 2009 Presidential Physical Fitness Testing.   We have selected activities that can all be done at the Tam High football field and running track.

The Athlete Activity requires that the boys perform certain tests and then take the tests again at least 30 days later to measure progress.   So, we have scheduled two dates for this activity.  This will also allow the boys to perform the Presidential Fitness Tests and then try to improve their scores again when we meet the second time.

The dates will be Sat. Oct. 17 and Sun. Nov. 22.  We will meet at the Tam High Track at 9:00 am on both of those days.  We will start with some warm-up stretching and then commence testing.  The events will be as follows:

·        Warm Up Stretching

·        Curl Ups (Presidential and Webelos Athlete)

·        Push Ups (Presidential and Webelos Athlete)

·        Pull Ups* (Presidential and Webelos Athlete)

·        Standing Long Jump (Webelos Athlete)

·        Vertical Jump (Webelos Athlete)

·        50 Yard Dash (Webelos Athlete)

·        Shuttle Run (Presidential)

·        V-Sit Reach (Presidential)

·        One-Half Mile or Mile Run** (Presidential)

·        Quarter Mile Run*** (Webelos Athlete)

*For purposes of determining the Presidential Fitness award level, the better of the push up or pull up score will be used.

**Boys that are 8 or 9 can choose either the half mile or mile run.  Boys 10 and over must run the mile run.

***Boys that run the one-half or mile run for Presidential need not run the quarter mile run as well.  The longer run will count toward Webelos Athlete.

The Presidential Fitness qualifying standards for each event are included in the attached spreadsheet.  The Presidential Physical Fitness Award is achieved by attaining the 85th percentile in all five events.  The National Physical Fitness Award is achieved by attaining the 50th percentile in all five events.

The proper technique for each of the Presidential Fitness tests is explained here:  http://www.presidentschallenge.org/educators/program_details/physical_fitness/events.aspx

When practicing any of the events, please make sure your scout uses the proper technique.

Lastly, Rob Luster leads a 30 minute workout at the Tam High track every Mon, Wed, and Fri morning at 7:00 AM.  These workouts are designed to build strength, speed, and flexibility.  The workouts were originally started a couple of years ago to aid our kids with their sports but they have now become a staple for parents as well.  Please feel free to join us and bring your scout to any of the workouts.  The workouts will help prepare them for the above fitness tests.  During the month of October Rob and I will focus the workouts on preparing the boys for the Presidential Fitness and Webelos Athlete testing.

We look forward to seeing you on Oct. 17th.
