In Memory of Cubmaster Mike

All of us with kids who were cubs in Mill Valley Pack 34 in the early 2000s fondly remember our Pack Leader Mike Hopton. He was an enthusiastic and selfless leader who made a lasting, positive impact on our boys and on Pack 34. Mike will be missed.

From his obituary in the Marin IJ:

Michael James Hopton Age 58, of Mill Valley, CA died unexpectedly at home on Friday morning April 9th, 2010. Mike was born in San Bruno, CA on November 13th, 1951 to Jane Reichhold and Harold "Hop" Hopton. A graduate of Crestmore High School, Mike went on to earn his BA in Education and taught Industrial Arts at Antioch High School prior to taking a 10 year break as owner /operator of the Hot Fudge Factory in Tiburon, CA. He eventually returned to teaching and spent the last twenty plus years teaching at Westmore and Jefferson High Schools in Daly City, CA. In 2007 he started "Be Calm, Be Cool, Mill Valley Driving School," patiently preparing hundreds of local youth to drive. Mike is survived by his wife Susan Hills, sons Noah and Jonah Hopton, and numerous cousins and in-laws. Mike was a devoted husband and father, giving countless hours as Den Leader of Cub Scout Pack 34, coach of the Mill Valley Vipers and Thundercats soccer teams, and building sets for Mill Valley Middle School plays. Mike's great passion was slowly converting their Mill Valley cottage into a "Victorian Painted Lady," a long labor of love that will now be completed by his sons. Mike was a wonderful man who always woke up on the sunny side of life. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but we know his spirit will forever be with us. A Celebration of Life will be held at 7:30 PM Friday night, April 16th at Mt. Tamalpais United Methodist Church, 410 Sycamore Ave., Mill Valley, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family has set up an educational fund for Noah and Jonah. Donations may be made to the Hopton College Fund at Bank of America in Mill Valley.
